xpt brings together the security and operational expertise of founder and CEO, Larry Barfield, with the sales automation expertise of founder and CTO, Melissa Mabon.
Larry Barfield is co-founder and CEO of xpt2. An accomplished business executive and visionary strategist with over 28 years of experience in the security and advanced electronics industry, Mr. Barfield’s career spans a full range of high-profile military, government, and commercial programs with a focus on bringing innovative solutions to complex problems.
Mr. Barfield previously served as the Vice President of Government Programs at SightLogix, Inc., where he was instrumental in guiding the Princeton-based high-tech, video analytics startup through market entry and into successful early stage growth. He created a highly successful channel program attracting numerous strategic partner relationships that helped propel SightLogix into the marketplace. He also spearheaded entry into new vertical markets in commercial aviation, electrical and water utilities, petro-chem, DoD, seaports, and International markets.
As a former Federal Government employee at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWAR), Mr. Barfield served as Project Engineer, COTR, and subject matter expert for a variety of programs within the United States Marine Corps Physical Security Branch. From designing electronic security systems for USMC SCIFs, formulating the worldwide Flightline Security Enhancement Program, securing Presidential Support facilities, executing the first successful DoD biometric pilot, and securing International military border areas, Mr. Barfield was recognized as an effective liaison between government and civilian technology entities. Most recently, he was the chief architect for the electronic security system design of the world-class National Museum of the Marine Corps located in Quantico, VA.
Prior to his Federal Government position, Mr. Barfield, as a design and field engineer for BAE Systems, provided high-tech security design and field management expertise to support high-value/high-consequence US Navy flightlines in Puerto Rico and Italy. With his expertise in thermal imagery and systems automation he developed the first FLIR Automation system. Mr. Barfield also provided engineering services to support US Department of State, USMC, and US Navy.
Mr. Barfield served in the United States Naval Submarine Service aboard several Fleet Ballistic Missile submarines during the Cold War where he specialized in acoustical intelligence, Target Motion Analysis, and combat readiness.
Melissa Mabon is co-founder and CTO of xpt2. Trained as a philosopher, Ms. Mabon has been a highly successful entrepreneur and expert-systems designer.
In 1994 Melissa Mabon co-founded Pragmatech Software Inc., headquartered in Amherst, NH. From 1994 through the end of 2003, Ms. Mabon served as CTO and principal designer of software and services for the company’s core expert systems technology. Pragmatech's solutions automated the process of creating customer-facing selling materials, such as proposals, presentations, and RFP responses. The company delivered solutions to field sales, marketing, proposal, and bid teams in Fortune 1000 companies, including those in technology, telecommunications, healthcare, financial services/insurance, distribution, and manufacturing.
As CTO Ms. Mabon worked with early adopters and customer advisors from companies such as CIGNA, HP, Dell, Motorola, Reynolds & Reynolds, Kronos, SAP, PeopleSoft, and with sales and proposal consultants, including Shipley Associates, Complex Sale, and Corporate Visions.
By the end of Ms. Mabon’s tenure in 2003, Pragmatech Software Inc had grown from a self-funded, bootstrap company to a $10 million business. Among other awards, the company received the Inc 500 award in 2001, when it ranked as the 14th fastest-growing software company; and as #112 fastest-growing company overall. Other notable awards include the New Hampshire Entrepreneur of the Year in 2002 and New Hampshire Remarkable Woman in 2003.
Education: Melissa Mabon graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude, from Ohio State University in 1979 and holds two masters' degrees from Columbia University (MA, M. Philosophy). While at Columbia, Ms. Mabon taught philosophy classes and a section of Columbia's acclaimed Humanities Core Curriculum. She has done extensive research and development in logic, epistemology, and expert systems.
